"Morning on the Upper Pool - The Tower of London, c.1860"
The scene is set looking towards the Tower of London near Simon's Wharf, circa 1860.
Built in 1078, the White Tower dominates the surrounding buildings.
At this time, the steamship was starting to make a more regular appearence at the River's wharfs and quays, although sailing vessels continued to predominate for a further few years.
Mid-stream, a collier brig is moored on the barge trots. In the right foreground, there lies a small square rigger, and in the centre, a pair of spritsail barges prepare to be towed downstream by a waiting paddle tug.
