MARINE PAINTINGS
The scene is set just after dawn, looking down Greenwich Reach.
A small Scandinavian timber barque is being hauled to Surrey Dock. These little ships visited the River Thames mostly in the summer months - the very buoyant timber cargo was loaded above deck level to get the vessel down to her 'marks'.
A collier discharges her cargo into surrounding lighters, which will carry their cargoes further up river. A 'stackie' hay barge drifts upstream with fodder for the multitude of London's horses; the return cargo will in all likelihood be their muck, this to be employed in the fields of East Anglia.
In the distance lies the imposing facade of Greenwich Hospital.
