MARINE PAINTINGS
It is early morning on the north bank of the River Thames, looking down river on Limehouse Reach.
This stretch of the River was made up of eighteenth century houses used as small wharfs, ship and barge builders and marine store houses.
In the distance can be seen the prominent tower of St. Anne's church, built between 1712 and 1724. Midstream, a collier brig discharges her remaining cargo into surrounding lighters; she will drift away downriver in a few hours at high water.
Unaffected by tide or wind an early iron-hulled steamer creeps by in the narrow channel. Crewmen take advantage of low water to make some repairs to the rudder of their spritsail barge.
